"Kay’s singing and speaking...were so vibrant and alive that the opera felt big and gorgeous." - TheaterScene
about
Soprano Christina Kay is a versatile performer whose work bridges early and contemporary vocal traditions. She has appeared as soprano soloist in Handel’s Messiah at Carnegie Hall and performs regularly with ensembles including ARTEK Early Music and The Academy of Sacred Drama. Known for her quick musical instincts, expressive singing, and meticulous preparation, she is especially drawn to repertoire old and new that invites singers to shape the music creatively.
Christina has a particular affinity for Renaissance and early Baroque repertoire. Informed by historical research, she brings imaginative ornamentation and rhetorical clarity to 16th- and 17th-century music, exploring the spontaneity and expressive freedom that once defined vocal performance. In 2022 she co-founded Filigree Ensemble, an artist-led project that explores historically informed improvisation and rhetorically focused programs in intimate chamber settings.
Her stylistic range extends equally to contemporary music. She has premiered art songs with New York Composers Circle and songSLAM!, and has helped develop new choral and small-ensemble works as a member of the GRAMMY-nominated vocal sextet The Western Wind, the New York Philharmonic Chorus, and True Concord Voices & Orchestra, among others. Her theatrical work has involved sharing the stage with drones; working with silent actor Tony Lopresto to bring forgotten dramatic Baroque oratorios to life with The Ac

ademy of Sacred Drama; and a Prague production of a semi-tonal
opera centered on the work of Gertrude Stein, where she performed in foot-tall platform shoes as part of the production’s boldly imaginative staging, and was praised for her "vibrant and alive" (TheaterScene) and "perfect" (Opera Wire) portrayal.
Deeply engaged in the administrative side of the arts, Christina serves as the Music Development Director for the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola’s music programs, including its historic concert series. Her work there unites her deep commitment to performance with her dedication to creating sustainable avenues for classical music to flourish for generations. Also a dedicated educator, she has taught private voice and piano for more than a decade, and periodically leads day- and week-long adult choral workshops. She lives in Fort George near Fort Tryon Park (her favorite green space in New York City) with her void cat, Cleo.
